“Looking back at the photographs…”

October 14th, 2009

I seem to recall that’s a line in the song ‘Parisienne Walkways’ by Phil Lynott & Gary Moore. I’m a big fan of both of their work but it’s not for that reason that I chose that phrase when considering a title for this post.

The reason I chose that particular title for this post was because I have literally been looking back at the photographs, photographs I have taken in the years between 2001 and 2005, of business jets (bizjets), mostly at Luton Airport.

Due to it’s proximity to London, Luton Airport is the UK centre for business aviation. In addition to the VIP passengers passing through the airport there are also major maintenance facilities based at Luton which account for many of the bizjets visiting the airport.

A typical Luton scene

There was a time I was making several visits a year to Luton Airport to photograph (during the time I was semi-seriously into aviation photography) - it’s surprising when looking back just how many pictures I have taken. I have uploaded a selection of the more interesting images to a new picture page entitled BizJets, linked from the Pictures menu above.

Emirates Airbus A380 A6-EDE

Emirates Airbus A380 A6-EDE visited Birmingham Intl. Airport (BHX) on the 9th of September 2009 for the official opening of the new International Pier and to help celebrate the Airport’s 70th birthday.

I took the day off work to go and see this marvel of engineering in the flesh. It was well worth the effort! This is one seriously BIG aircraft. I wasn’t prepared for just how big it is compared the the next biggest, the Boeing 747. You just have to see it to believe it - it’s spectacular!

A request to use my picture…

I was pleasantly surprised a few days ago to receive an email from a lady in the marketing department at Jet2.com requesting the use of one of my old pictures on their website.

Channel Express Airbus A300

It’s an old picture taken back in October 2000 at East Midlands Airport (shown here) of a Channel Express cargo aircraft, an Airbus A300B4.

Jet2.com is the new name for what was previously Channel Express (Air Services), the rename coming about in 2006 when Channex freight operations adopted the Jet2 branding formerly used for Channel Express passenger services, after which Jet2.com continued to operate all contract charter and freight flights.

I was happy to agree to them using my image and I agreed that they could do this free of charge on this occasion because with it being an old image (scanned from an old Kodak print) I don’t have hi-res. They will use a lower resolution library picture on their website with a picture credit identifying it as my image.

Even though I’m no longer going out taking pictures I still have several hundred images out there on various photo libraries and it’s always a nice surprise when you get this kind of approach so long after taking a picture and uploading it.

Big brother is watching you…

Ok, maybe not THAT big brother but rest assured, whatever you’re up to, someone is watching.

Case in point - I placed a listing on eBay a few days ago to sell a bit of radio gear I don’t have a use for anymore. For convenience and because I couldn’t be bothered to take a picture of my item for sale I used a picture from another sellers listing (as many do, apparently). I was today emailed by that seller who was a bit miffed that I’d used his picture without asking permission. Oops - busted!

Now as a photographer, who has at times had my own pictures used without permission, I should know better so an apology was made after a brief email exchange. I suspect that what really annoyed him though was the fact I had an identical item for sale at a starting bid of less than half his asking price!
