All change at Brawn GP.

Or as they’re now known, Mercedes Grand Prix Racing. They say that a week is a long time in politics. Well it’s also a long time in Formula 1! Just a few short weeks ago it was looking very much like Brawn GP would set about the 2010 season with their newly crowned world drivers champion, Jenson Button, as their number one driver. It now looks very much like this deal with Mercedes has been a done deal for some time and that Jenson was blissfully ignorant of Mercedes desire to acquire the team, rename it and install one if not two German drivers, leaving Jenson out in the cold. Hence his recent flirting (or maybe more) with McLaren.

Should Jenson move to McLaren, and I’m kind of hoping that he does, after all, who could fail to be impressed by their track record and facilities at the McLaren Technology Centre where Jenson was a recent guest, I think he’ll do very well next season - at least as well as he would have done had he gone into next season with Brawn GP. It’s certainly an interesting time for Formula 1 and the rumour mill is working overtime. Hopefully a deal, one way of the other, will be struck soon!

Job done for Jenson Button and Brawn GP.

post race celebrations

Well it didn’t quite go down to the wire but it was still a very exciting race in Brazil where Jenson Button came from 14th on the grid to finish 5th in the race. With his closest championship rivals Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello finishing 4th and 8th respectively this put Jenson into an unassailable position in the drivers standings with a lead of 15 points with only one race to go (at Abu Dhabi in November).

The pressure of the past few months is now well and truly lifted and as you can see from the post race pictures, this means an awful lot to both Jenson and the rest of Brawn GP.

Rubens was gracious in defeat in what has been a close fight between the two team mates. He said after the race, “I am pleased for Jenson, as a friend, and as a great champion, and if I didn’t win, he should have won it, so well done to him.”

As team principal and owner of Brawn GP, Ross Brawn said, “Jenson’s drive today was the the drive of a world champion.” I’ll echo that and say “Well done Jenson on a great drive in Brazil and becoming the new Formula 1 World Drivers Champion!”

It’s going down to the wire…or is it?

An intriguing race and one more point for Jenson Button. What this means is that third place or better will now secure the drivers championship for Jenson if he can achieve that at the next race in Brazil.

I’m as ever optimistic and I hope that Jenson does secure the 6 points required in Brazil. If not it’ll be a bit of a nail biter at the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. I really do hope it doesn’t go right down to the wire…but you never know!

Japanese F1 GP at Suzuka.

Last weekend it was Singapore, this weekend the Formula 1 Roadshow has moved on to the Suzuka circuit in Japan. It’s a welcome return to this circuit after a few races at the Fuji Speedway - Suzuka is one of the great racing circuits in the world and the scene of some great races in the past.

First and second practise today (Friday) were both rain affected and Jenson Button didn’t even leave the garage in P2. The weather should improve from here on in with hot dry conditions for Saturday practise & qualifying and the race on Sunday. Destiny beckons - come on Jenson!

Singapore F1 Grand Prix 2009…

September 28th, 2009

…was won by Lewis Hamilton after a flawless drive from pole position. Congratulations to both Lewis and the McLaren team for an great effort.

But what of Jenson Button and Brawn GP? Well it seems my earlier blog entry was made just a little bit too soon in the day!

Despite topping the time charts after first practise, Jenson fared less well in second practise and had a bit of a nightmare qualification, failing to get into Q3 and ending up 12th on the grid.

Despite his lowly starting grid position (eventually promoted to 11th following an irregularity with the weight of Nick Heidfelds BMW car) Jenson drove a great race to finish in 5th place, one place ahead of his closest championship rival, team mate Rubens Barrichello.

The net result of this is that Jenson is now 15 points ahead of Rubens with 3 races to go. What this also means, if you care to to a few sums, is that Jenson could…just possibly clinch the drivers title if he gains 5 or more points more than Rubens at Suzuka in Japan next weekend. We shall see…

Race day is now fast approaching (Sunday September 27th) and they’re currently involved in first practise with the Brawns, McLarens and Red Bull cars all looking good.

I’m personally hoping that Jenson Button can win this weekend and then go on to secure the world drivers championship but with rain a distinct possibility over the next few days, including race day, it should be an interesting weekend. Come on Jenson!
